The Pyrénées-Atlantiques Department owns the ski areas of the Gourette and La Pierre Saint-Martin winter sports resorts and the infrastructure of the La Rhune tourist train . It is also the organizing authority for public transport by ski lifts in the municipalities of Eaux-Bonnes (Gourette), Arette (La Pierre Saint-Martin) and Sare (La Rhune) under the legislative provisions of article L 342-10 of the Tourism Code.
To manage the public service of the ski lifts on these three sites, the department has chosen to delegate its operation to a departmental public establishment, the Public Establishment of Altitude Stations.
